In short: literacy

*Future, *Learn, *Moments January 15th, 2007

The competent person is a person who can transform information through judgment into knowledge.

I was reading my bloglines and happened upon James’ old blog after reading Will’s post about his start in blogging. We all get rather reflective this time of year don’t we! It’s like taking a big deep breath before plunging into the waves of work again I suppose.

Anyway, I got two things out of my little virtual travel:

  1. A copy of David Squires’ 1999 article on which James based his weblog title, IncSub (short for incorporated subversion) – I have the article somewhere but who knows! and
  2. This great quote from Hans Siggaard Jensen in Denmark (nice find on that one James!). The link was broken but I found Jensen’s staff info at the Danish University of Education. No luck finding that quote again though.

To me, the notion of having the ability the transform information into knowledge is what we should be pushing for in learning – future-proofing education in a way – and to me this quote sums up the ground on which literacy firmly stands.

As a related topic, I’ve also been reading (slowly) Mejias’ sequence of posts about networked proximity, sections of his dissertation draft. Literacies, broadly, cannot be discussed in isolation from our social, cultural and political aspects of life and learning.

I’ll continue to read with interest. :o )
